Discover Kaleida

See the naturally blue soil of Stepside.

Stepside is home to Kaleida's biggest area of blue soil. It sounds strange, but the soil here is naturally a cool shade of greenish-blue. Visitors can come to Stepside and enjoy the many pleasures it has to offer, and a day-trek to see this unusual natural landmark is well worth the effort.

The History of the Stepside Blue Soils

The soil around the Stepside Volcanoes is rich with copper particles. Many years ago volcanic eruptions brought up a mix of different minerals and elements from deep within the planet's crust, including a large quantity of copper. These minerals became part of the soil at the bases of, and beyond, the volcanoes, wherever the rain has washed them. The copper oxidized and turned a pale greenish-blue.

Stepside is a wide lowland, and during warmer periods of its history has been submerged beneath the sea. This means that the area is relatively rich in limestone, making the soil in some areas pale. This is true for the Blue Soils, with the result being that the oxidised copper shows up clearly.
